Maracatu - Brazil
The Maracatù is a complex event that takes place during the Carnival and performed by groups of several dozen people. The origin is ascribed to a division into “nations” (congados) of African slaves by the colonial authorities. The parades are moving during long nights of partying taking around this extraordinary mixture of ritual figures in which you can recognize the characters and costumes of the Portuguese masters, African rhythms and actions, symbols and beliefs of religious syncretism, the condomblè and other elements from different cultures.
